Is sitting in a smoking gathering and wearing shorts above the knee impermissible and does it prevent angels from entering? And does not mentioning God openly in this gathering fall under the Hadith, "its meaning being that whoever does not mention God in a gathering will have regret from God"?
Interaction and companionship among relatives are religiously desirable, especially if they involve obedience to Allah. These times should be utilized for studying knowledge, enjoining truth and patience, and offering mutual advice. However, smoking and wearing short clothes that expose what is between the navel and the knee for men are not permissible according to the majority of scholars. Sitting with those who commit evil is permissible while condemning their actions if one is safe from being influenced by them. But if one is not safe from being influenced or cannot condemn their actions, then it is not permissible to sit with them. The remembrance of Allah in a gathering is a religious requirement, achieved by remembering Allah, sending blessings upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, and concluding the gathering with the expiation for the gathering (Kaffarat al-Majlis). Angels do not attend gatherings where there is disobedience or that which harms them, such as smoke.
