Is it permissible to place both hands completely over the face during supplication (du'a), such that the fingertips are on the forehead and the palms are on the cheeks, for the purpose of feeling psychological comfort?

Among the manners and widespread sunnahs of duʿāʾ reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is raising the hands during it. The ways of raising the hands reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, vary into five types:

1. Pointing with one finger towards the sky: This is done in duʿāʾ or in praising Allah, and it has been narrated by a number of Companions. 2. Raising the hands and extending them, with their palms facing the sky: This is the most common and is understood from the ḥadīth of Anas regarding the duʿāʾ for rain (istisqāʾ). 3. Raising the hands with their backs facing the Qiblah, and their palms facing one's own face: This is reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when making duʿāʾ and seeking refuge. 4. Placing the backs of the hands towards the supplicant's face: This is the opposite of the third type, and it is reported that this is for intense supplication (ibtihāl) or seeking protection. 5. Turning the palms over, so their backs face the sky and their palms face the earth, while extending the hands and raising them towards the sky: This is reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the duʿāʾ for rain (istisqāʾ) and for averting calamity.

As for placing the palm on the face, it is not among the postures mentioned in the Sharīʿah, and it is not permissible because duʿāʾ is an act of worship in which one must adhere to what has been reported from the Lawgiver.
