If a father kills his son by mistake, two things are required of him: blood money (Diyyah) and expiation (Kaffarah). If he kills him intentionally, the predominant view among scholars is that he is not subject to retribution (Qisas), but blood money is required from his wealth. They differed regarding the necessity of expiation: the Shafi'is and Hanafis mandated it, while it is recommended (mustahabb) according to the Malikis and Hanbalis. Thus, expiation is obligatory in accidental killing without dispute, and it is required in intentional killing either as an obligation or a recommendation.
