What is the ruling on fleeing from the Law of Allah in order to follow one's whims?
A Muslim must follow the path of guidance and steadfastness upon it, and restrain the self from desires. Allah Almighty says: "And do not follow desire, for it will lead you astray from the path of Allah," and He says: "And who is more astray than one who follows his own desire without guidance from Allah?" Thus, no one is permitted to act in matters of religion except with what Allah and His Messenger have legislated. Acts of worship are built upon divine law and adherence, not upon desires and innovation. Following desires extinguishes the light of the intellect, blinds the insight of the heart, hinders adherence to the truth, and leads astray from the straight path. Therefore, turning away from knowing the ruling of the Sacred Law is a clear error, and success and happiness lie in knowing the limits of Allah and abiding by them.
