What is the authenticity of the narration reported from Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him: "We used to gather in a circle around the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, after the morning — meaning Fajr — prayer, and he would teach us the Noble Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the obligatory duties. Then, when we left him, we would review [what we had learned]"?

The mentioned tradition has not been found, but it is reported in the Sunnah (definition) that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to sit in his prayer place after the Fajr prayer until the sun rose. This is a recommended Sunnah that the early Muslims (Salaf) adhered to, spending this time in remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and supplication (du'a). Al-Waleed ibn Muslim mentioned that Al-Awza'i used to do this and narrated from the Salaf that this was their guidance. After sunrise, they would then engage in studying Islamic jurisprudence. Malik also mentioned that Sa'id ibn Abi Hind, Nafi' the freed slave of Ibn Umar, and Musa ibn Maysarah used to sit after Fajr, remembering Allah until the day was well advanced. As for learning and reviewing after that, it was reported from Al-Hasan (definition) and Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them, that their companions used to review their lessons after leaving their gatherings.
