What is the wisdom behind sending the unlettered Prophet to an unlettered nation?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Among the wisdoms behind sending the Prophet (peace be upon him) as illiterate are:

1. So that the deniers would not doubt his call, nor say that he learned sciences through reading and writing. Rather, it was revelation from Allah, and this is more profound in challenge and miraculousness.

2. That his characteristic was mentioned in previous scriptures as being illiterate, taught by Allah the Almighty, so that the People of the Book, who knew his characteristics, would recognize him.

3. As for his sending among an illiterate nation, it is because they possessed a purer فطرة (innate disposition) and were more prepared to accept and carry the message, unlike nations whose فطرة had been corrupted and whose thoughts had been scattered by philosophies. And although the nation was largely illiterate, there were writers, readers, and literary figures among them.
