What is the Islamic law's view on the one who says that the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, could read and write in 73 languages, and was called "Ummī" (illiterate) because he was from the people of Mecca, which is Umm al-Qura (the Mother of all Settlements), wondering: How could he teach them what he did not master, when Allah the Almighty said: "It is He who has sent among the unlettered a messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom"?

The illiteracy of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is not a flaw but rather a perfection, a miracle, and a proof of the truthfulness of his prophethood. It has been said that his designation as "unlettered" (ummi) stems from his lineage to "Umm al-Qura" (Mecca), or from his being in the state of a mother who does not write, or from his belonging to a nation that did not write.

The Prophet's illiteracy was a description of his perfection because it demonstrated that his knowledge was divine and revelatory, not acquired through traditional means, making it a sign of divine emanations.

His illiteracy, in terms of not being able to read or write, is established by Quranic and prophetic evidence, including the Almighty's saying: "And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe it with your right hand. Otherwise, the falsifiers would have had doubt." (Quran 29:48), and his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Indeed, we are an unlettered nation; we do not write or calculate."

The inference from the verse: "It is He who has sent among the unlettered a messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom" (Quran 62:2) does not negate his illiteracy. For the Prophet did not teach them reading and writing, but rather taught them the Book and wisdom, and removed ignorance and error from them. This is part of the miracle of prophethood: that an unlettered person is sent to teach an unlettered nation.
