Is it permissible to supplicate for the removal of harm from Allah the Almighty, or is patience better?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There is no harm in supplicating for the removal of harm; in fact, it is preferable. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged asking for well-being and used to supplicate for the removal of affliction, as he did with Uthman ibn Abi al-'As. Allah Almighty also mentioned the supplications of the Prophets for the removal of harm, such as the supplications of Ayyoub and Dhul-Noon. Furthermore, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, supplicated to his Lord for the removal of magic from him, which indicates the desirability of supplication when adversities occur. Supplicating for the removal of affliction does not contradict patience; for patience is restraining oneself from discontent, and supplication is an act of worship that Allah Almighty has commanded us to perform. A servant can combine the two acts of worship: patience and supplication, and this is the most preferable and complete approach, and it was the state of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
