The answer

A student of knowledge must improve their intention by seeking knowledge for the sake of Allah's pleasure and to remove ignorance from themselves and others. They may also obtain a certificate for employment and to benefit Muslims. However, if their intention is limited solely to worldly gain, they are in danger, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever learns knowledge from what is sought for the Face of Allah Almighty, and does not learn it except to gain a worldly عرضاً, will not find the عرف of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection." They must repent to correct their intention. As for earning from employment, there is no harm in it as long as the work is permissible. The Permanent Committee and Ibn Uthaymin have permitted studying for a certificate with the correction of intention, because a certificate can be a means to benefit people or to acquire knowledge, or because righteous deeds bring the good of both this world and the Hereafter, and it is not like showing off. Religious benefits are the اصل in acts of worship, and worldly benefits are secondary.
