Is releasing an animal equivalent to freeing a slave?

Releasing an animal from captivity is not equivalent to freeing a slave (emancipating a neck) as mentioned in Islamic law. Rather, what is meant in Islamic law by "emancipating a neck" is the liberation of a male or female slave owned by a person, whether this is done as an expiation, a vow, or a voluntary act for the sake of Allah the Almighty.
