The first case that was subject to 'awl occurred during the caliphate of Umar, when a woman died leaving behind a husband and two sisters. The Companions, such as Al-Abbas, or Ali, or Zayd (there is a difference of opinion), advised him regarding 'awl, and Umar ruled accordingly.
