What do you advise those whom Allah has afflicted with severe trials, in order to help them endure it?

This world is a place of trial and tribulation. The believer experiences varying circumstances within it, and he is rewarded for whatever befalls him, whether good or evil. Allah Almighty says: "He who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed." (Quran 67:2). And He says: "And We test you with evil and with good as a trial; and to Us you will be returned." (Quran 21:35). Whatever afflicts a believer—be it fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, or harm, even a thorn—there is a reward for him in it, and his rank with Allah is elevated thereby. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Wondrous is the affair of the believer, for there is good in all his affairs, and this is not for anyone except the believer. If prosperity overtakes him, he thanks Allah, and that is good for him. If adversity befalls him, he endures patiently, and that is good for him." When calamity strikes, one must be patient and say: "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." (Quran 2:156). In this there is solace for the calamity and a good outcome. The believer should also thank Allah for His blessings and look at those who are beneath him [in worldly matters].
