The intellect is the basis of religious obligation. Through it, a person understands the divine discourse and benefits from remembrance and admonition, as Allah Almighty says: (Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present) and (Only those of understanding will remember). It is the origin of virtues and the wellspring of manners. Allah has made it the foundation of religion and the pillar of this world. Through it, the realities of matters are known, and one distinguishes between good deeds and evil deeds. Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "The essence of a man is his intellect." Al-Hasan al-Basri said: "Allah never entrusted anyone with an intellect except that He would rescue him with it one day." Among the sayings of the wise: "The intellect is the best hope, and ignorance is the most harmful enemy." It is narrated from Ibn Abbas regarding His (Allah's) saying: (Verily, in that is an oath for those who have understanding), he said: "Intellect and reason."
