"Following dispensations" (tattabu' al-rukhas) is condemned by scholars. Ibn Abd al-Barr narrated a consensus (ijma') that it is impermissible for an ordinary person to follow dispensations, especially if it becomes their habit. However, there is no harm in adopting the easier opinion in one or two matters when there is a need to achieve a religiously recognized benefit or to avert harm. Al-Subki said: "It is permissible for the ignorant to follow () and to adopt a dispensation from the sayings of scholars at times of pressing need, without habitually seeking out dispensations."
