Is it obligatory to raise one's hands when supplicating upon waking up at night, and is one required to begin with the customary supplication: “There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner; to Him belongs all sovereignty and all praise, and He is over all things competent. All praise is due to Allah; glory be to Allah; there is no god but Allah; Allah is the greatest; and there is no might or power except with Allah”?

It has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that whoever wakes up at night and recites the dhikr (remembrance) mentioned in the hadith, then supplicates to Allah, his supplication will be answered. And if he performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted. Raising the hands during supplication is mustahabb (recommended) and not wajib (obligatory). It is preferable to adhere to the mentioned dhikr to ensure a certain response. And even if the supplication is not preceded by the dhikr, a probable response is still possible, for Allah answers whoever calls upon Him.
