A wife whose husband paid for her Hajj expenses then changed her intention to perform Hajj on behalf of someone else for a sum of money asks: should she inform her husband and return what he paid, or should she take both sums without his knowledge? And is she sinful?

All praise is due to Allah. It is permissible for a woman to perform Hajj on behalf of another, provided she has already performed Hajj for herself. This is subject to two conditions:

1. She must seek her husband's permission to travel for Hajj on behalf of another. 2. She must inform her husband if he has paid for her Hajj expenses, regardless of whether she has received money from the other person or not, because the husband only permitted her to go for Hajj for herself.

As for someone who has not performed Hajj for themselves, it is not permissible for them to perform Hajj on behalf of another. If they do so, the Hajj will be counted for them, and they must return the money they received for performing Hajj on behalf of another.
