The question

Is it permissible to postpone making up for missed fasting and prayers for a wife suffering from severe mental depression that affects her behavior and memory until after childbirth and her return to taking medications that help her regain her sanity and normalcy, or must she be compelled to make them up, taking into consideration that this may harm her and worsen her condition?

The answer

We ask Allah to grant your wife healing and well-being. A person afflicted with a psychological illness is excused for actions committed unintentionally, but they should not use their illness as an excuse to commit sins. You are not required to compel her to make up the prayers she missed and the days she did not fast, because a pregnant woman is permitted to break her fast, and the time for making up fasts is extended. If she is excused due to her illness, wait until Allah grants her recovery, then explain to her what she needs to make up in terms of days. As for prayers missed due to sleep or forgetfulness, many scholars hold the view that they should be made up at leisure, not immediately. If reminding her about them would harm her, then wait for her recovery. As for the Fajr prayer, she should sleep early, and you are not required to wake her if her sleep is not excessive, especially if waking her would result in harm.
