Is the pilgrim's spending of the nights of the eleventh and twelfth of Dhul-Hijjah in Mina considered valid, or is a sacrifice (hady) required of him, knowing that he did not spend the entire two nights and his delay on the first night was due to an excuse?

Scholars have differed regarding what is required from one who abandons staying overnight in Mina. Some hold that it necessitates giving an unspecified amount in charity. Others hold that it requires a mudd (a measure) of food or a dirham for each night, or one-third of a sacrifice for each night. According to Imam Ahmad, an unspecified amount of charity is required. According to Malik, abandoning one night's stay necessitates a sacrifice.
