Is a wife who will give birth in mid-Ramadan required to only make up the missed days, or to both make up the missed days and offer expiation?

A woman must make up for the Ramadan (definition) fasts she missed due to post-natal bleeding (nifas (definition)) after she becomes pure. It is not permissible to delay it until another Ramadan begins. If she delays it without a valid excuse until another Ramadan commences, she must make up the fasts (qada') and pay a fidyah (definition) (feeding a needy person). However, if a legitimate excuse, such as illness, prevented her, then she only needs to make up the fasts.
