Does one who had intercourse with his wife in Ramadan, and the dawn (Fajr) adhan was called while he was ejaculating, then he completed penetration, owe a makeup fast and expiation? And what is the amount of the expiation, and must meals be prepared for the poor, or should they be given raw? And is it necessary to feed sixty poor people all at once and to give out the expiation immediately after Ramadan, despite his ignorance of its obligation?

The answer contains six points:

1. Your fast is valid, and there is nothing upon you if the adhan (call to prayer) was before Fajr (dawn). However, if it was after Fajr and you completed intercourse and ejaculation occurred, then your fast is invalid, and you must make up the day (qada') and offer expiation (kaffara), unless you thought it permissible to complete intercourse, in which case there is no expiation upon you. 2. Your ignorance of the obligation of expiation does not waive it. 3. The expiation for intercourse during Ramadan is to free a slave; if that is not possible, then to fast for two consecutive months; if you are unable to do that, then to feed sixty poor people. The majority of scholars mandate this order, while the Malikis do not require this sequence. 4. The sufficient amount of food is one mudd (approximately 750 grams), and it is safer to give half a sa' (approximately 1.5 kilograms). 5. It is permissible to provide the food cooked in the form of a meal, and it is not necessary to feed the sixty poor people all at once. 6. The expiation for intercourse must be performed immediately by those who are able, according to the preference of some scholars.
