The soul departs the body during sleep in a partial departure, which differs from its departure at death. In sleep, the soul retains a connection to the body, and this is accompanied by a loss of consciousness. However, its departure at death is complete. The evidence for this is Allah's saying: "Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term."
