Did any of the emigrants return to Mecca after the Conquest, or is it that what is forsaken for the sake of Allah may not be returned to?

It is not permissible for an emigrant to return to his homeland from which he emigrated for permanent settlement. This is considered among the grave sins. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, permitted some Companions to live in the desert. The deaths of some emigrants in Mecca were coincidental during rituals or for other reasons, not for the purpose of permanent settlement.
