What is the ruling on eating onions and garlic outside of prayer times, and is the dislike (karahah) here one of prohibition (tahrim)?

The jurists differed on the ruling regarding eating onions, garlic, and anything with an offensive smell for someone who does not intend to go to the mosque. One group disliked it [eating them] as a matter of purification (tanzihan) rather than prohibition (tahriman), while another group did not dislike it. Ibn Taymiyyah elaborated that eating them is not disliked for someone who can remove their smell or for someone who does not intend to gather with people. However, eating them with the intention of avoiding an obligation is prohibited, and one must strive to remove their smell.
