What is the ruling on celebrating the passage of a year, two years, or more or less, since a person's birth (birthday), and blowing out candles? What is the ruling on attending banquets for these celebrations? And if a person is invited to them, should they accept the invitation or not?

The Islamic legal proofs indicate that celebrating Mawlids (birthdays of prophets or saints) is an innovation (bid'ah) that has no basis in Islamic law. It is not permissible to accept an invitation to such celebrations, as doing so would be an endorsement of innovations. Allah says: "Or do they have partners who legislated for them of religion that which Allah has not authorized?" And He says: "Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know." It is authentically reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him): "Whoever performs an action which is not in accordance with our matter (religion), will have it rejected," and "Every innovation is misguidance." These celebrations involve imitating the Jews and Christians. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, hand span by hand span, cubit by cubit..." And he said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them."
