What is the ruling on celebrating children's birthdays?

Muslims have only two holidays: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Allah replaced them for Muslims instead of the days of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance). If there were other holidays, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would have informed us of them. Celebrating birthdays is a tradition and an imitation of the disbelievers, and a Muslim must distinguish himself from them. Imitating the disbelievers is forbidden. Sheikh Ibn Baz mentioned that celebrating mawlids (birthdays of prophets or saints) is an innovation with no basis in Islamic law, citing the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever performs an action which is not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected." These celebrations involve imitating the Jews and Christians, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against following their ways, saying: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them."
