What is the meaning of the fear of God?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The meaning of the fear of Allah Almighty is to sense His greatness and that He knows what is secret and what is manifest, as in His saying, exalted be He: "And conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts. Does He who created not know, while He is the Subtle, the Acquainted?" and His saying: "There is no secret conversation of three but that He is their fourth, nor of five but that He is their sixth, nor of less than that or more but that He is with them wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things." So, when a believer realizes that his breaths and deeds are being watched, and that there is no escape except through submission and obedience, he attains the awe of Allah, and becomes among the submissive and certain ones who work for the Hereafter and do not feel secure from the plan of Allah; because of His saying, exalted be He: "And no one feels secure from the plan of Allah except the losing people."
