Knowing the most authoritative interpretation is not an individual obligation ( 'ayni), but rather a collective obligation (fard kifayah). Knowledge of the circumstance of revelation ( al-nuzul) falls within the science of (Qur'anic exegesis) and assists in understanding the verse, for knowledge of the cause leads to knowledge of the effect.
