Is the knowledge of the preponderant exegesis and the reason for the revelation of verses an individual obligation (fard al-ayn) upon every Muslim?

Knowing the most authoritative interpretation is not an individual obligation (wajib 'ayni), but rather a collective obligation (fard kifayah). Knowledge of the circumstance of revelation (sabab al-nuzul) falls within the science of Tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) and assists in understanding the verse, for knowledge of the cause leads to knowledge of the effect.
