What is meant by "cursed be he who slaughters for other than Allah," and does it include slaughtering for a guest?

Slaughtering for prophets and saints, hoping for their blessings, or for jinn, to appease them or ward off their evil, is strictly forbidden, as it constitutes major Shirk (polytheism). However, slaughtering for guests as a sign of honor, or for family to provide for them, and slaughtering as an act of drawing closer to Allah, like giving charity for the deceased, or offering sacrifices on the Day of Sacrifice on behalf of the living and the dead, all of these are permissible; in fact, they are good deeds for which the doer is rewarded. The intent of the verse: "And what has been dedicated to other than Allah thereby" refers to that which is slaughtered as an act of drawing closer to other than Allah, not that which is slaughtered to honor a guest.
