What is the ruling of the Shari'ah on a husband forcing his wife to sit with him while he watches movies containing forbidden things (munkarat) and listens to musical instruments, and is the wife considered disobedient if she refuses to do so?

It is impermissible to watch TV series and movies that contain unveiled women and musical instruments, and it is impermissible to obey the husband in this, because obedience is only in what is good, and there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator. However, if the wife is compelled to sit while her husband watches these things, there is no sin upon her, provided she lowers her gaze and does not intentionally listen; for what is forbidden is intentional listening, not merely hearing. The husband should be advised gently and wisely, informed of the harms of such viewings, encouraged to watch beneficial lessons and sermons, cooperated with in acts of obedience, and conflict and debate should be avoided, and prayers should be made for him.
