Will the Prophet, peace be upon him, be held accountable on the Day of Judgment, and why did he seek forgiveness more than seventy times a day if he was exempt from accountability?

Some scholars are of the view that the reckoning on the Day of Judgment includes all creation, including the prophets and messengers, citing the general statements mentioned in the Qur’an. However, the majority of scholars hold that the prophets and messengers will not be held to account on the Day of Judgment, and that the general statements mentioned apply to disbelievers, or that the questioning of the messengers is a questioning for testimony and clarification, not a questioning for rebuke and reprimand.

As for the Prophet's abundant seeking of forgiveness, despite Allah having forgiven him his past and future sins, Allah’s promise of forgiveness does not preclude the Prophet from taking the means to achieve this forgiveness, as seeking forgiveness is one of the greatest means of forgiveness. Allah’s knowledge of things and their effects does not negate the causes He has attached to them. Just as striving is required to attain the causes of Paradise, so too is seeking forgiveness required to obtain forgiveness.
