The answer

Zakat is obligatory on old currencies if they were gold or silver, provided they reach the nisab (minimum taxable amount), which is 85 grams for gold and 595 grams for silver. However, if they were not gold or silver and have lost their monetary value, then no zakat is due on them.

Zakat is obligatory on currently circulating currencies (whether gold, silver, banknotes, or metals) if their value reaches the nisab of gold or silver, whichever is less.

If currencies are kept as a hobby and still retain monetary value, then zakat is due on them. But if they have lost their value and are no longer in circulation, then no zakat is due on them. If the currencies are for trade, their value is assessed at the completion of the hawl (one lunar year), and one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%) is to be given. If the currencies owned by the questioner are gold, silver, or circulating currencies, he must estimate their value for each past year and give one-quarter of one-tenth.
