What should a person do who wrongly accused three women of theft, then their innocence became clear to him, and he feels deep remorse?

Accusing an innocent Muslim of theft is forbidden, based on the Almighty’s saying: "And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly borne a slander and a manifest sin," and based on the Prophet’s (PBUH) saying: "Whoever says something about a believer that is not true, Allah will make him dwell in the mire of Khabaal until he retracts what he said." If the accusation was explicit, then seeking forgiveness is obligatory, and if that is not possible, repentance suffices.

A Muslim must not harbor ill thoughts about believers, as Allah Almighty has forbidden that by saying: "O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin," and by the Prophet’s (PBUH) saying: "Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most untruthful of speech." Scholars have considered ill suspicion of Muslims to be a major sin. If the suspicion is merely a fleeting thought, there is no sin in it, unlike if it settles in the heart.
