What is the ruling on fidya for slaughtered animals, and is it permissible to eat from them with relatives?

If the slaughter is intended as an act of drawing closer to Allah with the intention of feeding the needy, then it is commendable (mustahabb). If a person vows it upon the occurrence of a calamity, then he is obligated to fulfill it and spend it in the specific manner he designated, and he is not permitted to eat from it unless it has become customary to do so. However, if the one slaughtering is voluntarily offering the ransom (fidyah) and has not vowed it, then he may distribute the slaughtered animal as he wishes, and he may eat from it and feed his family.
