Is it permissible to adopt the fatwas of the Four Imams concerning the maximum duration of menstruation due to irregular periods resulting from breastfeeding?
If a breastfeeding woman experiences bleeding, and it is less than a day and a night, it is not considered menstruation. However, if it exceeds a day and a night and continues for more than fifteen days, it becomes Istihada (non-menstrual bleeding). In this case, she should perform ghusl (ritual bath), pray, and perform wudu (ablution) before each prayer.
Regarding the ruling for a common person (Al-Aami), the madhhab (school of thought) of a common person is the madhhab of the one who gives him a fatwa. He is not obliged to adhere to a specific madhhab. However, it is not permissible for him to selectively follow the concessions (rukhus) of different madhhabs or the slips (saqatāt) of scholars. He must ask someone whose knowledge and piety he trusts. If he receives conflicting answers, he should act upon the one that is supported by the greater knowledge and piety of the mufti, because picking and choosing (Al-Takhayyur) negates responsibility and leads to following one's whims. Furthermore, the mufti's fatwa will not absolve him before Allah if he knows that the matter is, in reality, contrary to what he was advised.
