It is forbidden to sell or use images of animate beings, unless they are incomplete in a way that the owner could not live without the defect, or they are treated with disrespect and do not imitate God's creation or involve glorification. This is indicated by the : "If the head is cut off, then it is not an image." Also permissible is what is a mere pattern on a disrespected garment, which explains the exception "except for a pattern on a garment" as referring to an image that does not have a soul, or something that is treated with disrespect.
