Is it true that a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) complaining of poverty, and he advised him to marry?

Marriage is a cause of an abundance of provision, as affirmed by the Almighty's saying: (And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and all-Knowing) [An-Nur/32].

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: (There are three whose help is a duty upon Allah: the Mujahid (fighter) in the way of Allah, the Mukatab (slave who has a contract of manumission) who desires to fulfill his contract, and the one who marries seeking chastity).

Statements from some Companions confirm this, such as the saying of Ibn Abbas: "Allah has encouraged them to marry, commanded it for free people and slaves, and promised them wealth through it," and the saying of Ibn Mas'ud: "Seek wealth through marriage."

As for the story of the man who complained of poverty to the Prophet, who then ordered him to marry, its Hadith is weak and not authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Similarly, the story of the man who married four wives until Allah opened the door of provision for him is a fabricated story with no basis.

There are other weak Hadiths that are not authentic regarding marriage being a cause of wealth, among them: "Seek provision through marriage," and "Marry women; for they will bring you wealth," and "Marry poor people; Allah will enrich you."
