How can the Almighty’s saying: (And marry the single among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty) be reconciled with the reality of observing many who married poor and died poor? And is the richness mentioned in the verse richness of the soul?

Many exegetes have concluded that the noble verse: (And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing) [An-Nur/32], is a promise from Allah of enrichment for those who seek marriage. It has been narrated from Ibn Mas'ud that he said: "Seek richness in marriage."

This is supported by the hadith of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Three are rightfully due Allah's help: the Mujahid in the way of Allah, the Mukaatab (slave who has a contract of manumission) who desires to fulfill his contract, and the one who marries seeking chastity."

However, because reality may show that many who marry do not attain financial richness, scholars have mentioned several ways to reconcile this reality with the verse: 1. That the intended richness is spiritual richness and contentment, not financial richness. 2. That what is meant is the facilitation of lawful marriage for whoever desires it for chastity, so that Allah may enrich him thereby from zina (unlawful sexual intercourse). 3. That the promised richness in the verse is conditional on Allah's will. 4. That richness may occur even for a short period, thereby fulfilling the promise. 5. That the promise of richness is specific to those mentioned in the verse: the unmarried and the male and female slaves, as they achieve sufficiency through the expenses provided by their spouses or masters.

Thus, it becomes clear that there is no contradiction between the noble verse and the reality of some not achieving financial richness after marriage.
