What is the ruling on describing the Qur'an as the ancient speech of Allah?

The Holy Qur'an is the word of Allah Almighty in its wording and meaning. Allah Almighty spoke it, and Jibreel heard it and descended it upon Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is revealed and not created, and whoever says it is created is a disbeliever.

The meaning of "from Him it originated" is that Allah Almighty spoke it, and the meaning of "and to Him it returns" is that it will be lifted from the hearts and Mushafs at the end of time.

Describing the Qur'an as "eternal" has two meanings: 1. The first intended meaning: That it is uncreated, and that the genre of Allah's speech has been eternal, and He has been speaking whenever He willed, and this is the saying of the Ahl as-Sunnah. 2. The second intended meaning: That the Qur'an is a meaning or meaning and letters with which Allah spoke in eternity and then did not speak thereafter, and this is among the innovations of the Ash'aris.

It is better not to use the term "eternal" for the Qur'an; rather, what the Salaf said should be stated: "The Qur'an is the uncreated word of Allah." If the one who uses the term "eternal" intends the first meaning, then his intention is correct. If he intends the second, then his intention is false.
