The Sabeans are mentioned in the Quran in two states: a state of monotheism, faith, and salvation on the Day of Judgment, and a state indicating that some among them will be subjected to torment like idolaters. Scholars have differed in defining the Sabeans, but it is agreed upon that they are not a single nation; rather, there were believers and disbelievers among them. The believers among them were saved before the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). However, after his prophethood, they are required to follow him, and whoever refuses will face the Hellfire. In the present era, Sabeans refers to the Mandaeans, who are a sect that did not believe in Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Their situation is like that of the Jews and Christians who encountered Islam but did not believe in it. They consider John the Baptist (peace be upon him) to be their prophet, and they venerate planets and stars. Most jurists permit taking jizya (tribute) from them, similar to the People of the Book.
