Whoever prays forgetfully while in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) must repeat that prayer or prayers, by scholarly consensus, because purity is a condition for the validity of prayer. He prayed without purity, whether he did so intentionally, forgetfully, or out of ignorance. The repetition should be immediate and in order. It is recommended for one who is in a state of major ritual impurity, if he wishes to sleep, eat, or drink, to wash his private parts and perform ablution.
