What is the ruling on breaking records in Islam?

The fundamental principle concerning things is that they are permissible and lawful. Nothing deviates from this principle except for a more compelling reason, and this is out of God's mercy towards His servants. If a Muslim understands this rule, he will be spared the burden of asking about every new development, especially concerning things that people know are not inherently forbidden. Rather, the prohibition arises in the ways they are dealt with, such as extravagance, wastefulness, or forbidden risk-taking.
