Is it permissible to wear coats, as I live in Canada where the cold is severe?

The permissibility of wearing leather coats depends on their purity. If they are made from the hide of a ritually slaughtered pure animal, then wearing them and praying in them is permissible by consensus. However, if they are from an impure or unslaughtered animal, the preponderant opinion is that their hides become pure through tanning. Furthermore, for women to wear them in front of non-mahram (definition) men, they must fulfill the conditions of the Shariah-compliant hijab (definition), such as being loose and spacious, not being an adornment in themselves, and not resembling men's clothing.
