What is the interpretation of Allah's saying: "And most of them do not believe in Allah except while they associate others with Him" in Surat Yusuf?

The verse, "And most of them do not believe in Allah except while they associate others with Him," is interpreted to mean that the polytheists believed in Allah as the Creator but associated others with Him. The greatest form of shirk (polytheism/associating partners with God) is worshipping other than Allah. Al-Hasan al-Basri interpreted it as referring to the hypocrite who acts to show off to people. There is also a subtle shirk (shirk khafi) which includes swearing by other than Allah, using incantations (ruqyah), amulets (tama'im), love charms (tawlah), and omens (tirah). The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized that shirk is more subtle than the creeping of an ant. Its remedy is to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating partners with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know."
