Is it permissible for a woman to seek khul' from her husband who is a student of sacred knowledge and calls people to it, but he watches pornographic images and websites, and when confronted, he denies it and resorts to violence, knowing that they have three children? And what is the ruling, Islamically, on taking money from him?

The wife is advised to continue gently counseling her husband and reminding him of God's greatness and His constant watchfulness. She should tell him that a believer must be ashamed for God to see him where He has forbidden him to be. His actions are even uglier because he enjoins people to fear God and issues fatwas for them. The verses "O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?" and "Do you order [other] people to righteousness and forget yourselves?" are cited as evidence. If he does not respond, she is permitted to seek Khul' (dissolution of marriage) from him, based on God's saying: "If you fear that they will not uphold the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon them concerning what she gives in compensation." Moreover, if this husband does not repent from his actions, his trustworthiness has fallen, his testimony is not accepted, and he should not be consulted on matters of religion.
