What is the ruling on eating monitor lizard meat for medicinal purposes?

The majority of scholars prohibit eating chameleons because they are considered impure (khaba'ith), citing the Almighty's words: "And He prohibits for them impure things." Imam Al-Shafi'i and Ibn Qudamah based their view on the principle that whatever the Arabs considered impure is prohibited, and the chameleon is among the things they considered impure. Furthermore, it is not permissible to consume chameleons for medicinal purposes because Allah has not placed healing in what He has forbidden.
