Is it permissible to buy a gold gift for one daughter to the exclusion of her siblings?

It is permissible for a father to give gold to his daughter, excluding her male siblings, if she is in need of it, because need is considered a justification for differentiation among children in giving gifts. The ruling on this is similar to the ruling on expenditures, in which equality is not obligatory; rather, each is given according to their need. This is supported by the Almighty's saying: "Or is it one who is brought up among ornaments and in contention is not clear?" and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "If Usama were a girl, I would adorn her and clothe her until I spent on her."

Scholars differed on the obligation of justice among children in giving gifts. The preponderant opinion is that it is obligatory, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Fear Allah and be just among your children." Whereas the majority view that equality is recommended, not obligatory.
