Is it permissible to perform the call to prayer (adhan) at work outside of the prescribed times for adhan?
It is permissible to make the call to prayer () for purposes other than prayer if it has been legislated for, such as the adhan in the ear of a newborn, or to drive away Satan and frighten the jinn. This is hoped to be a means of repelling Satan and fortifying oneself against the jinn. Imam Ahmad narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If the ghouls appear to you, then call the adhan." One who makes the adhan for an incidental matter should consider those around him and not disturb them. As for making the adhan for purposes other than prayer or an incidental matter without a reason, it is not permissible. However, humming the adhan to oneself without disturbing others is permissible.
