What is the ruling on daydreams?
Daydreaming is a term used to describe the thoughts and desires that occupy one's mind. Scholars have differed regarding its ruling:
- There is no punishment for passing thoughts or inner speech due to their overwhelming nature for a person. Intention, resolve, and purpose are excused as long as they are not translated into speech or action.
- Inner speech has five levels:
- The Hajis (fleeting thought): There is no accountability for it by consensus.
- The Khatir (passing thought): It is pardoned according to the sound opinion.
- al-Nafs (inner speech): It is pardoned according to the sound opinion.
- The Hamm (concern/resolve): It is pardoned according to the sound opinion, and if it is for good, one is rewarded for it.
- The Azm (firm resolve): This is the strength of intention and determination. One is held accountable for it according to verified scholars, while others hold that it is pardoned. If this type of resolve is related to good, one is rewarded for it.
