How is the inheritance divided between a deceased mother's only son and daughter?

If a woman dies leaving only a son and a daughter, her inheritance is to be divided between them into three shares: two shares for the son and one share for the daughter, based on the Almighty’s saying: "Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females." It must be noted that matters of inheritance are serious and complex, and a mere fatwa is not sufficient. Rather, the case must be referred to the Sharia courts for investigation and consideration of wills, debts, and other rights that the heirs may not be aware of.
