Is it permissible for a married couple to refrain from sexual intercourse for a period of two years, after agreeing to separate after this period for reasons related to study and the absence of a mahram?

Intercourse is a right for both spouses, and there is no harm if they agree to temporarily forgo it for a benefit. However, this does not prevent either of them from demanding their right. Marital problems do not necessitate separation; rather, one must be rational and preserve the family unit, because divorce has negative consequences. Some scholars have gone to the extent of saying that the basic ruling on divorce is prohibition, based on the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “There should be no harm or reciprocating harm,” and that the basic ruling on it is prohibition except in case of necessity.
